Let's first discuss what quantum physics is and how it relates to Tommy John Surgery.  Quantum Physics is a branch of physics which deals with physical phenomena at nanoscopic scales where the action is on the order of the Planck constant. It departs from classical mechanics primarily at the quantum realm of atomic and subatomic length scales. Quantom physics was a good topic for me to relate to Tommy John surgery because it involves the MRI. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), is a medical imaging technique used in radiology to investigate the anatomy and function of the body in both health and disease. MRI scanners use strong magnetic fields and radiowaves to form images of the body. The MRI is essential in diagnosing a torn Ulnar Collateral Ligament.

Sometimes, a doctor can diagnose a UCL injury through just a history and physical examination. Diagnostic tests include:

  • X-rays
  • MRI
  • MRI after gadolinium dye has been injected into the elbow

Because such tests are not 100% accurate, however, it can be difficult to diagnose a UCL injury.
