What is heat?

Heat is defined as movements of atoms in a substance or body, measured in J,kJ,cal, or Cal. Calories is the amount of energy needed to transfer in order to raise the temperature of one gram of water by one degree Celsius. It is the transfer of kinetic energy from one medium or from one energy source to another.

What are the law of thermodynamics?

  • First -Law of Conservation of energy states that energy cannot be created or destroyed but can be changed from one form to another.
  • Second law of thermodynamics states that "in all energy exchanges, if no energy enters or leaves the system, the potential energy of the state will always be less than that of the initial state", this is known as entropy ( means a measure of disorder)

Potential Energy vs Kinetic Energy

Potential energy is energy that has yet to be used, it can be seen as stored energy. Kinetic energy is energy in motion, it is the energy being used. Energy can be transferred from potential energy to kinetic energy.
